The first place to visit during your camping holiday near Le Mans is the town's Roman walled enclosure. These walls were built between 280 and 295 and are the best preserved of the whole Roman Empire in France. Once you've explored the 1,300 metres of this unique monument and the Plantagenet town, head towards the Abbaye Royale de l'Epau, one of the most beautiful examples of Cistercian architecture in France, or the Château du Lude, the last of the châteaus of the Loire valley to be lived in. Fancy some fresh air? Come and explore the hills and deep valleys of the Alpes Mancelles or go to Les Ajeux and try to spot the 230 species of bird who take refuge there.

While you're on holiday in the Sarthe, you could explore the area on horseback or get your very first introduction to this discipline on a short horse ride. It's difficult to imagine a camping holiday near Le Mans without tasting the famous 'rillettes'! Once called "brown pig jam" by Rabelais, this speciality is perfectly paired with a glass of Jasnières, the most well-known of the Sarthe wines. For an afternoon snack, try the 'sablé' shortbread biscuit from Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Still feeling peckish? Head to one of the member restaurants of the culinary association 'Les 19 Bonnes Tables de la Sarthe' and taste the 'marmite sarthoise', a speciality stew that is absolutely delicious and comforting.
