I bookCamping in Guînes
The town of Guînes is right at the heart of Guînes forest, just a few kilometres from the Opal Coast. Once you've arrived, you'll be in the ideal location for exploring the natural and cultural…
Sports and relaxation in Guînes forest
Very close to your campsite is a fantastic playground covering almost 800 hectares. Holidaymakers of all ages will have plenty of activities to choose from, including horse-riding, bike rides, walks and treetop climbing adventure courses, to enjoy in the fresh air of Guînes forest. The place is well-known across the local area as being the landing site for the first flight over the sea. There is a monument in one of the forest clearings that pays tribute to this achievement, from 1785.
Camping in Hauts-de-France: visiting the dragon, forts and lace of Calais
Your camping holiday in Pas-de-Calais is also a perfect opportunity to explore the heritage sites of Calais. As a family or with friends, go and explore the various forts throughout the town that were once all linked by the city walls. Fort Nieulay is a rare example of a lock fort in France and it is also Vauban's number one masterpiece of Calais. Take a detour to the Bourgeois de Calais statue which pays tribute to a key event in the history of the town, then go on a tour of Calais' Musée de la Dentelle (lace museum). After that, head to the seafront to see the Dragon, an impressive automated figure. You can expect an original experience here!
Discovering the local culinary specialities of Pas-de-Calais
It's difficult to imagine cuisine that could be more comforting than that of Pas-de-Calais. While you're staying in Guînes, you'll get the chance to taste some of the many local specialities, including Maroilles, named the most elegant of strong cheeses in the year 960 by the bishop of Cambrai. For your main course, try the 'Welsh', a dish made using sliced bread, melted cheddar, eggs, mustard and beer, mussels and chips, or the 'carbonade flamande' which is a beef and onion stew with butter, bread (or spice bread), sugar, mustard and beer. This is one of the most popular dishes in northern France!
